What Is STAN?
STAN is a public awareness telephone information system designed to communicate important information about emergencies, high profile events, and general industrial activity to the people of Southeast Texas.

STAN represents a partnership between our area's media, industry, and local emergency management to enhance public communication and emergency response in Hardin, Jefferson, and Orange Counties. Informational messages placed on the STAN line are voluntary and done in addition to any requirement to activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Emergency messages that require the public to take action are coordinated with local emergency management officials.

How Does It Work?
Public officials and industrial companies in Southeast Texas place messages on STAN. For emergency and high profile events, messages are posted on STAN and then sent automatically to the media. The media, in turn, helps notify the public. The public can also call STAN directly to hear informational messages. During a five (5) minute period, STAN can accommodate calls from 2,000 people.

Who Operates STAN?
STAN is operated by FIRSTCALL, an interactive telecommunications firm located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The STAN system is fully automated. Funding for STAN is underwritten by the Southeast Texas Plant Managers Forum.

When Should I Call STAN?
Call STAN toll-free at 1-877-the-STAN if you are concerned about a noise or see flaring near a local industry. Call STAN for information about extraordinary weather events, large traffic accidents, railcar derailments, or truck chemical spills.

What Will I Hear If I Call STAN?
Any recorded Emergency Messages (incidents that require the public to "shelter-in-place" or evacuate) will play first. Any recorded Urgent Messages (high profile events) will play second. The caller can then choose to hear General Messages about industrial activity in Hardin, Jefferson, or Orange Counties.
